MCEWAN, Ian (born 1948).

First Love, Last Rites.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1975.

INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION, ASSOCIATION COPY, first printing. Octavo (21 x 14cm), pp.165; [3]. Publisher's black cloth, gilt titles to spine. Dust-jacket designed by Bill Botten, with printed price of £2.50 net. Inscribed by the author to the flyleaf: "To Kate. Good luck | in Oxford. Ian McEwan".

Lightly handled, a touch of spotting to the top edge. Dust-wrapper shows very well with just some slight toning to the reverse. Uncommon as a signed first edition. Fine.

An excellent copy of the author's first published work, winner of the Somerset Maugham Award in 1976. The recipient is Kate Chapman, Ian McEwan's editor at Jonathan Cape. Incidentally she lent her name to Karl Stromberg's secretary in Christopher Wood's novelisation of James Bond, The Spy Who Loved Me.
