FIRST EDITION, first printing. Octavo (19 x 14cm), pp.xxiv;247; [3]. Publisher's dark green cloth generously blocked in gilt to spine and upper, bevelled edges to the boards, top edge gilt, publisher's repeating monogram endpapers. Illustrated with 123 plates and 192 in text illustrations.
Bookplate of Fred Cornish Frost, Teignmouth auctioneer and antiquarian to pastedown, over a previous bookplate. Booksellers blind stamp to flyleaf. Some occasional light spotting. Endpapers a little split along gutters but binding still very sound. Some toning and spotting to edges. Cloth a tiny bit rubbed to extremities. Uncommon. Very good.
Lewis Forman Day was a leading light in the Arts and Crafts movement and was an accomplished industrial designer and decorative artist who collaborated with William Morris and Walter Crane. Here he examines the adaptability of plant form to the purpose of ornament.
